UIC College of Medicine Confronts Healthcare Risk with Online Patient Safety Leadership Program
Healthcare professionals now have the opportunity to improve patient safety and manage risk in their organizations with a new online Patient Safety Leadership degree program from the University of Illinois. In recognition of Healthcare Risk Management Week, June 16-20, the University of Illinois Global Campus is proud to share the announcement of the innovative Patient Safety Leadership online degree program.
With soaring healthcare costs and a rise in incidents of medical error, the emerging field of Patient Safety Leadership presents an opportunity for professionals to be agents of change in their organizations and their communities.
In partnership with the University of Illinois Global Campus, the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) now offers a Master of Science in Patient Safety Leadership and two graduate-level certificate programs.
"Students in the Patient Safety Leadership program will be a part of breaking the cycle of medical error and improving the safety of patients who participate in the healthcare system through education, leadership training, and evidence-based course objectives," says Anne Gunderson, Director for the Patient Safety Leadership Program and Director for Interprofessional Patient Safety Curriculum UIC College of Medicine.
The goal of the Patient Safety Leadership program is to provide healthcare workers -- doctors, nurses, and administrators -- ways to explore how they can create a culture of patient safety and lead the development of quality health care practices in their hospitals, clinics, or medical practices. The online program focuses on inter-professional teamwork, simulation training, communication and collaboration, medical error science, organizational change, and healthcare leadership.
The Patient Safety Leadership program delivers courses using online instruction that emphasizes self-directed learning and team collaboration. An on-site residency in Chicago, Illinois, embedded within one of the courses, provides the opportunity for students to practice and apply the tools and principles introduced in online courses, and to participate in active learning with cohort members in a face-to-face format. Students with professional licenses may be able to use courses in the program toward continuing education requirements.
Graduates of all Global Campus programs receive degrees or certificates from the fully accredited University of Illinois, just as they would receive for campus-based programs.
The Global Campus also offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree Completion Program, created in partnership with the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
For the Master of Science in Patient Safety Leadership, Illinois residents and contributing members of the University of Illinois Alumni Association will pay $29,160 for the entire degree ($810 per credit hour for 36 credit hours). Students residing outside Illinois will pay $32,400 for the entire degree ($900 per credit hour for 36 credit hours). For the graduate certificates in Patient Safety, each of which is 12 credit hours in total, Illinois residents and contributing members of the University of Illinois Alumni Association will pay $9,720 for the entire program, and students residing outside Illinois will pay $10,800.
The Global Campus offers online bachelor's completion degrees, master's degrees, and graduate certificate programs in collaboration with partnering academic units on the residential campuses of Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield. Each program's curriculum is developed by world-class University of Illinois faculty who are leaders in their fields of study.
