Program Information

The B.A. in economics is designed to meet the standards set by the discipline. Ultimately, the department, through its curriculum and faculty resources, intends to prepare its graduates with the requisite skills and knowledge to perform successfully in careers in many settings - private enterprise as well as government or not-for-profit enterprise. The focus of the department is on 1) providing a learning environment that supports and stimulates students' academic and intellectual growth, 2) providing the competencies and analytical problem-solving and quantitative skills and knowledge appropriate to the degree being sought, 3) engendering a spirit of good/effective citizenship, and 4) providing students with a life-long resource base from which they can draw as they develop and move through their professional lives.


Program Entrance Requirements:

1. Completion of foundation courses in accounting, mathematics, statistics and behavioral sciences. See Economics Entrance Requirements.

2. Completion of university lower division general education requirements. See UIS General Education Requirements.

3. Non-native English speakers must attain a score of no less than 500 (paper based), 173 (computer based) or 61 (internet based) on the standard TOEFL test.

4. Preference will be given to students who:

  • complete at least 54 hours of college credit with an overall grade point average of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale (from an accredited college or university.)

  • demonstrate a need for online course work because of distance, work or care giving issues that are incompatible with regularly scheduled class offerings


  • How to Apply:

    Students must apply for admission to UIS and to the online Economics degree program. To apply to UIS, complete the online application & pay the application fee: (see www.uis.edu/admissions).

    To apply to the online Economics degree program, send a letter of intent to :

    The letter should not exceed 750 words and should describe your:
    • academic background
    • career plans
    • experience with online learning
    • rationale for pursuing an online rather than face-to-face degree intentions regarding course completion

    Letters of reference attesting to your ability to pursue your educational goals in an online environment are recommended (but not required.)


    Enrollment Capacity:

    Each fall, the Economics program will admit up to 25 online students. Students who qualify for admission to the program but who are not admitted due to space constraints will be placed on a waiting list.

    Application Deadlines:

    There are no application deadlines. Review of applications will be ongoing therefore students are encouraged to apply by April 1 of each year to assure full consideration for the Fall semester.

    Program Cost(s):

    Residents of Illinois pay in-state tuition rates. Current per credit hour rates can be found by clicking here. In addition, online courses are assessed a $25 per credit hour technology fee. Students who are taking all of their courses online are exempt from certain fees assessed to on campus students. Click here for further details.

    UIS has implemented a special tuition rate that applies only to online courses. This rate is termed “electronic tuition” or simply “E-tuition”. The following students will qualify for E-tuition:

  • All Illinois residents who have applied and been admitted as a degree-seeking student in an online program and take only online courses.


  • All non-residents of Illinois who have applied and been admitted as a degree-seeking student in an online program and take only online courses.


  • The E-tuition rate for students who began undergraduate online programs in Fall 2006 is $201 per credit hour plus the $25 per hour online fee.
