Master Online Teacher Certificate: Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality (MVCR) Series

Student FAQs

GENERAL QUESTIONS

"What is a Master Online Teacher (MOT) certificate, and what can it do for me?"

The master online teacher (MOT) certificate is a noncredit certificate issued by the Illinois Online Network, an outreach program of the University of Illinois. It is comprised of three required courses, Online Learning: An Overview, Instructional Design for Online Course Development, and Student Assessment in Online Courses; a core choice between Technology Tools for Online Learning and Encouraging Communication in Online Courses; an elective (either Web Design Principles for Online Educators, Issues and Strategies for Faculty Training, Copyright, the TEACH Act, and Intellectual Property Issues in Education, or Multimedia Principles for Online Educators); and the capstone Practicum course. When you have a master online teacher certificate, you have the evidence that you know about online learning, how to do it, and that you have done it successfully.

"I want graduate credits. Is it possible to earn credits for MVCR classes?"

To obtain graduate credits for MVCR classes, you must apply for admission to the University of Illinois Springfield as a non-degree seeking graduate student. You will need ION permission to register for the classes offered through UIS. With ION permission you register at UIS for the classes, pay the tuition, and earn the credit. For more information contact the ION coordinator.

"I want to pursue the MOT. How soon can I start?"

All of the core classes are offered each of the five MVCR terms so you may begin at any point. You may take up to two classes at once.

"How long does it take to complete the MOT certificate?"

An MOT might be completed in as few as three MVCR terms. If you must, MOT completion can stretch over several terms.

"Will I need an online bookstore?"

None of the online classes in the MVCR requires a textbook at this time. All of the readings are online. One course is being developed for the near future that will use one readily available book.

"How much time will I be expected to spend in each course?"

Most of our courses are designed to require 6 to 9 hours of reading, study, and participation per week. Your experience may vary from this

"Will there be an orientation course?"

In addition to registration in your MVCR class, you will also be enrolled in a Moodle orientation experience that provides extensive resources to help understand what to do and how to operate in our course management system. ION staff are also available to assist you.
