Master of Health Professions Education
University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine
Program Information
The Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program is designed for health professionals who want to better prepare for educational leadership roles. The program may be completed either on campus (during intensive summer sessions) or online (in a semester-long format). Both formats allow professionals to pursue their degrees while maintaining full-time jobs. Courses address topics including curriculum development, program evaluation, instruction, student assessment, current educational issues, research methods, and leadership. MHPE students are encouraged to use their home institutions as a laboratory for the practical application of educational and leadership concepts.
The MHPE Online option allows students to participate in the MHPE program using a computer and an Internet connection. Course schedules, assignments and readings are published on the web. Students carry out individual and group activities, and present their ideas in online discussions.
All core courses and a wide selection of electives will be offered over the Web allowing students to complete all of their coursework online. Students participate in a regular schedule of weekly activities and discussions throughout their courses, which take 15 weeks to complete. A group or individual project is usually required to complete each course.
In July of each year during which a student has taken a course, he or she is required to attend the annual five-day conference held on campus. This event provides an opportunity for face-to-face contact with faculty and fellow students. Students share research, experiences and ideas in poster sessions, symposia, and informal receptions.
