School Nurse Certificate Program

University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Nursing

Program Information

Although the School Nurse Certificate program began in 1986, our unique web-based program began in 1998. The program is consistent with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act as well as current state and national school nurse standards and guidelines. It focuses on health care management for school-aged children and is designed to broaden, refine, and strengthen the nurse's ability to implement the nursing process in response to the diverse needs of children in the school community.

Classes meet twice on the Chicago campus—once at the beginning and once at the end of the semester. Otherwise, the coursework and class discussions are conducted online. Graduates are eligible for national certification through the National Board for School Nurse Certification. Graduates are also eligible to seek certification for the Illinois State Board of Education School Service Personnel Type 73 Nurse School Certificate.

Out of state students are waived from the on campus classes.

Because there is so much overlap in many of the nursing specialties, we encourage BSN prepared nurses who are NOT school nurses as well as practicing school nurses to take these courses for enrichment and to fulfill continuing education goals.
