Admissions and Prerequisites

Admissions Requirements: Admissions Requirements
Currently, formal application to both the University and the program is required for admission. Students should submit the following materials to the UIS Admissions Office (One University Plaza, Springfield, IL, 62703):
1. UIS application (see www.uis.edu/admissions/apply.html)
2. Application fee (see www.uis.edu/admissions/apply.html)
3. Submit a statement of purpose for pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, as well as a discussion of any related educational/work experiences (two pages, using a 10 point font maximum) (see csc.uis.edu/information/oadmissions.html)
4. Submit a sample of Java source code that the student has written for a prior course or related work project (see www.uis.edu/admissions/apply.html)

Prerequisites: To apply to enter the online Computer Science (CSC) program, students must have:


  • Earned a minimum of 30 credit hours at the lower-division (freshman/sophomore) level.

  • A grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale from an accredited college or university

  • Completed two semesters of programming experience in Java

  • Completed one semester of discrete mathematics or finite mathematics prior to applying for admission to the Computer Science Program

  • Completed one semester each of calculus and statistics. Students considering advanced degrees or careers in scientific fields are strongly encouraged to take a 2nd semester of calculus; 12 hours from these courses may be counted toward the degree as general electives.
